St Urban 2016 salons indulge in musical-literary pairings from sources old and brand new, weighty and whimsical.
In January, The Brentano Quartet draws us into fugue world with Bach’s eternal Art of the Fugue and a four character spoken “fugue play” by Itamar Moses. In February, we go all-out Kreutzer, wedging Tolstoy’s murderous story between Beethoven’s monumental sonata and Janacek’s dreamy string quartet. In April, writer Laurie Stone performs her new work riffing on the evening’s trios by Schumann and Kurtag.
Our season finale (in May) fulfills St Urban’s mission to commission and premiere new chamber works annually: this year we are delighted to present Gordon Beeferman and Laurie Stone’s latest collaboration of words and music – for four singers and two pianists.
Starting in September, we will reprise our programming featuring three concerts. If you missed some or all of the Salon Series this past year, this is your chance to experience the sounds of St Urban 2016at Tenri Cultural Institute. Check out the season program.
